one of the huge draws to me for mac is the design, and os. if i can run mac os on this... that'd make it a no brainer. or am i missing something? what is wrong with these? anything?

Besides it's a Vizio? I can't get behind their products.

If you're looking for a quality laptop that is also aesthetically pleasing in PC form, I would suggest checking out Sony Vaio laptops.
  • cmeyers

i have looked at vaio's and can't stand them. did you guys not look at the link? they're beautiful and the specs seem great.
  • bmoore

the vizio looks great and vizio is good in my book. i bought a vizio flat screen tv early on due to it being ahead of what samsung and other competitors were offering at the time. i've never had a problem. same with my vizio surround sound. now if i bought a new one today, i would probably go with samsung. i like their new models a little better. i say go for it if you want, but that price is approaching macbook pro prices (13" anyways) if i'm not mistaken. are you set on a certain size? have you looked at some of the new ultrabooks?
  • TRIBE

The specs are solid. Brandon, brings up a good point about it approaching the macbook pro price range.

    vs

price difference of $1200 with a tb hard drive and hi res screen on the apple. so the price thing is not exactly true. it's approching a very low end macbook pro.

However, if you are looking for a powerful pc, I would recommend an ASUS. I haven't had any issues with my machine and the specs/cost is great. I actually prefer using it over my iMac.

Yeah ASUS is the only brand I buy now. Smoking fast laptops for a great price.

yeah i've looked at them, but the site is confusing as hell, and never used a good one in person.

ASUS, Toshiba's Qosmio line, Fujitsu and a couple other more "top-end" brands offer beautiful aesthetic with great price structures and solid performance with great customer support(at least in my experience).

asus n series are the only ones that i've seemed to like from them, those toshiba's were ugly as hell, didn't even look at the specs. fujitsu, i have mixed emotions. don't really know.

but.... my original question wasn't "what's a good pc". it's asking if there's something about the new vizio line that makes them not worth the buy? is there something about them that they're hiding that the normal consumer wouldn't know?

From all accounts in reviews I've seen in my daily blog rounds, Gizmodo had a hands on and said it's a nice entry level "pretty" computer, and does some things well...but it won't wow you outside of the looks. It's a solid computer from what I've read but just from those few things I've read it sounds like it might begin to crumble under the weight of any heavy file manipulation. The other arguments against it were trivial in my opinion(the "magic pad" clone deal they have going on, I'd scrap anyway since I use a Logitech mouse that has multiple buttons and app switcher functionality), so I don't think it's bad by any means. I'd just be a little pensive on how it handles heavy multimedia(gaming, video/music editing, heavy design work). Until I see a review where that's the main focus, I don't know that anyone will really know how this thing holds up under conditions relevant to this forum.

Not overly in-depth, but a basic breakdown of both the desktop and laptop versions. I'm sure they'll have a more in-depth review when the thing hits shelves. I think the one thing they've done absolutely right is is the zero bloatware install of Win7(which for a fledgling startup in the computer industry is a HUGE deal).

yeah i just read that after you mentioned gizmodo. i'll have to check one out when they hit shelves i guess.

They are the first line of computers Vizio has put out so there's not really much information or reviews on how they perform, the specs themselves look great but you can't always just rely on that. Glad I clicked this thread though I'm thinking of picking up a PC and was leaning towards an ASUS, you guys just sold me on it.
  • Matt Borchert

It sounds to me that you want a laptop that looks and performs like an Apple....so just buy an Apple.

If you want a powerhouse laptop that can handle anything you through at it, get an ASUS G-Series.
  • Involuntary

I prefer ASUS. Superfast and yeah extremely great price/quality.
Seems to me that the VIZIO is just a bridge for PC fans who are not ready to switch to a Mac. (Look at the design) The specs are great though.

He looked at Apple and doesn't want to spend the extra money associated with them.

no... i want a laptop that doesn't look like an alien spaceship, that performs well, for a lower cost than an apple. this line seems to do the trick, and will most likely look into these, was simply wondering if anyone knows anything about these that would hinder me from buying them. that's all.

this is the kind of info i'm curious about. the specs look great, the computer looks great, so what is it about it that will make it crumble during heavy design work?
  • Matt Borchert

Well the specs look good on the Vizio, but as a new brand entering into the laptop space, odds are they will fail. So you have to decide if that's a risk that you're willing to take when it comes to long term support for your laptop. It's a super competitive space and most brands cannot establish themselves in a very brand loyal marketplace.

I'm sure they will work just fine.

also helpful, never really considered the support thing... but i wonder if microsoft support will be enough, or if vizio as a company will still support things, even though they might stop selling the laptops?

Well given how new they will be, I'd assume even if the company did fail it wouldn't be for like 2 years. So by that time the laptop will be getting old and it likely wouldn't matter.

They could be wildly successful too, who knows? That's really just the main risk with a new brand.

yeah makes sense. i doubt they will just completely bomb and be off the shelves in less than a year. i dunno. thanks for the input though.
