Kinda surprised there's been no Prometheus talk around here. Have you seen it? What did you think?

Since seeing it, I've been following some online discussions here and there and I am shocked at the amount of downright HATRED there is for this movie. People are ranting and raving about how "terrible the writing is" and how the film is riddled with "plot holes." The amount of silly nit-picking is hilarious. Can't remember the last time people got so riled up over a movie.

I felt like I watched an entirely different film. I loved it. It certainly wasn't what I expected and I had to take a few days to "digest" everything before deciding that I loved it but that's nowhere near a bad thing. Without getting too spoil-y, the film does answer some lingering questions about the "Alien" universe but those answers only bring even more and even larger questions. I personally love movies that make me think and that stick with me for days afterwards. I also appreciate films and stories that don't wrap everything up in a neat little package. Many of the questions Prometheus raises will have to be thought about and ultimately answered by the viewer themselves. Which I think is awesome. Religious and mythological themes and under-tones also run DEEP in Prometheus. There are so many facets to this movie that it's nuts. And I think that's why so many people don't like it; Too mysterious, too complicated. That and disappointment that it wasn't the ALIEN movie they were expecting.

Blows my mind that Ridley created such a crazy and huge story out of what was simply a set-piece from a small scene in the first film. I'm looking forward to seeing it again. And crossing my fingers that Ridley makes the rumored second half of this, I WANT MOAR.

What did you guys think? Love it or hate it, you have to admit that it was beautiful look at, haha.

Been an amazing summer for movies so far!

I just saw it a few days ago and honestly I wasn't very impressed. I feel like this movie was too hyped up and didn't really deliver... there were parts that were awesome but it just didn't feel very cohesive.
  • Lmerrill

I really dug it. But I'm getting really tired of defending it, and admit it's flawed in some areas. I like it. That's it.
  • prajoedi

havent seen it yet, but i heard the movie tells about origin of human.. it came from somewehre in Sirius B solar system. just like in Erich von Daniken books says weve been visited by visitors from stars, they were 3-4 meters tall, pale skin black eyes, they build this and that here and there they self claimend God. and those Gods made community called religion, so someday in future we will fight each other and after read those book, and watch Ancient Aliens episodes i'm pretty sure "GOD" didnt made us. but the alien engineered us. and i stop praying to 'God' from ' Popular Novels" that so called; Holy books. btw God just parked his ride near sun recently, massive sized equal to earth. :P

Haven't seen it yet, but from what I've heard people say about it, you either like it or don't

Not something i expected but it's all good.

I liked it; an imperfect but good film.

I think it starts to fall apart if you pick it apart too much, but for a thoughtful spectacle it was a lot of fun.

I think people really need to realize that Ridley Scott is making more. Yes it's confusing but he admits he didn't want to give out too much. Take it for what it is, as a first in the series. I loved it!

I just thought it was a modern update on the original Aliens. I thought it was a lot to digest, so many stand out characters that it was really hard to focused on one "bad guy". I saw no reviews or trailers and had no "80's ALIENS, in mind". I would have loved if it was just the human looking guys. But then again it wouldnt tie in. i thought the last twist at the end was a bit forced. 7/10 from me. But im not such a religious ALIEN fan. Overall I enjoyed it
  • Paul Granese

I really liked it, thought it was well done. There are a few flaws in it, but i just took it in as it was and i easily got past them.
  • Willy Wolf

Definitely. The overall structure is really similar, and quite a few sequences are pretty much events from Alien with more characters.
  • JoeBaronDesign

It was cool, but I think people were expecting it to be an "Aliens" movie even though it's been said to be its own movie. I have to find the link from James Franco's review for the Huffingtonpost, because it was an interesting one.

Yes, you leave with questions, but I think they might plan a sequel. One problem I had was, how did no one know each other before the ship? Wouldn't you know who would have been on the ship before you woke up? That seemed silly.

I did like how it had a similar pattern as Alien, while I've heard people were not crazy about it. Was it a great movie? No. Was it entertaining and left you wanting more? Yes.
  • breakingbrine

Definitely still has me thinking since I saw the midnight showing, tons of questions to figure out. Had minor flaws for sure but the good definitely outweighed the bad. Ready to see a sequel ASAP.
  • Sol Amstutz

I think a lot of people who have a problem with this movie/didn't think it was good are the people who, no offense, are too dumb to realize the immense depth and thematic elements of this movie. People want everything spelled out, but the fact is, you have to know some things to fully understand this movie. There is so much to go on, and so many things you have to pay attention to in the film, which is why I loved it.

Most of the reviews I've heard from people are just dumb surface level things. "How did the 'engineers' live on a planet with no food?, 'how did the black ooze just happen to come out when they got there?', etc. etc.".

There are so many recurring themes and awesome little things that if you notice them, will make your movie experience so much better. One of the most glaring ones is the theme of the life giver who sacrifices themselves for life to continue, the super obvious Prometheus mythology theme (there are tons of torn open abdomen references). The dude in the beginning breaking down his own body so primordial earth could thrive, the mural in the ooze room (torn abdomen guy, across from what looks like the alien queen, life/death), Shaw tearing open her own stomach to get the squid baby out, etc.

I really liked how they did the whole scene in the ooze room with Fifield and Millburn. The squid creature they encountered (which was a huge reference to face suckers) seemed to react to them based on their emotions. They were panicked and afraid, and when the thing latched on to the arm, they became violent and so did the creatures. They also had absolutely no response to David, because he's an android without feeling or emotion. Interesting.

I also thought it was interesting that they never explain why the Engineers got pissed at us and wanted to destroy Earth. If you notice though, they do mention something about the engineers corpses being around 2000 years old, which would put the doomsday ship launch at the time of Jesus Christ. My take on it was that Jesus was an engineer sent to Earth to try to set humanity on the right course, and then we crucified him, so they decided to wipe us out. Pretty cool plot line if you ask me.

There are sooooo many in depth things that if you think about them, you'll realize that this movie was awesome.
  • 8-bit ZOMBIE

I tend to agree, Sol. Too many people are too used to being spoon-fed their movie plots. If an original and thought provoking story comes along, they don't know how to deal with it other than to say it sucks. Sadly, your average movie goer doesn't want to think these days. Which is why we have to deal with Michael Bay now.

And no, it was definitely not a flaw-free movie but what movie is? The amount of nit-picking is ridiculous. I loved Avengers too but that movie had it's low points. Doesn't ruin it for me.

And yeah, the amount of depth Prometheus has is pretty crazy. I really love all the religious and mythological themes. Mixing of religion and sci-fi is always fascinating to me. I'm in total agreement with your all your points on the film as well Sol.

If you've seen the movie, (And whether you liked it or not) this in depth analysis is an amazing read and I think it's pretty spot on:

See the beginning never made any sense until I read a review. I thought of it as a punishment for the engineer who had no choice, but to do what it did. It is not explained as to why they were mad, but if there's a sequel, I'm curious to know if they would out. A lot of the points you mentioned, I do think some people would fly over people's heads since they're probably looking for action and kills.
  • Erchu

I enjoyed the film a lot. Some parts were awesome but a few scenes kind of felt like there were too many ideas of what should happen and how they could string it together. I also felt like there could have been a little bit more tension throughout the film. I like the fact I went into the film with questions searching for answers but was left with more questions than answers, much like the characters of the film. I'm excited for a sequel or trilogy or whatever they decide to do with it.

Also, I thought this was decent theory - http://www.prometheus-movie.com/community/forums/topic/7436
It expands on the whole "ancient alien" creation theory/story and how it could tie in with the film and sequel. I've always found this theory interesting.
  • 8-bit ZOMBIE

I had read about the Sumerian influences as well Erchu. Apparently the opening scene (The engineer sacrificing himself) is pretty much an exact re-creation of an ancient Sumerian myth. So awesome. Ridley has taken the backsotry to the Alien universe to an amazing height and depth.

    Amazing article. Great read.
  • 8-bit ZOMBIE

Forgot to mention this earlier - I was a little disappointed at first with the fact that the "Space Jockeys" ended up being so human looking. I wanted them to be the mysterious and strange looking creatures we caught of glimpse of in Alien. But the fact that what we all thought was a weird alien head is actually a helmet, is awesome. I also LOVE the look of the Engineers. Very human looking but just off enough to be creepy. Loved the later Engineer's bio-mechanical, Giger-esque body suit as well. So cool. So, I couldn't stay disappointed for long, haha.

Also, does anyone else just constantly think "METROID" while watching this or any of the other Alien movies? Haha. It's no secret that the creators of Metroid were HIGHLY influenced by Alien. But I was constantly thinking that while watching Prometheus too. (Especially the trailers) Charlize Theron even looks like Samus in her blue jumpsuit! I've also always believed that the Chozo statues from the original games were directly influenced by the Space Jockey in Alien. They look VERY similar.

I really liked the movie.....it may not have been perfect but what is
  • William Henry

I was disappointed with it after I first saw it, but I've come around since then. My disappointment mostly stems from me expecting it to be more like Alien and less an original movie. Completely my fault. Reading the various discussions about the depth of the movie really made me come around. I'm not sure if all the depth makes it a better movie from an entertainment standpoint, but I love that it has those depths.

    Ridley universe > Cameron universe

I completely agree with Sol and Ross here. This isn't a summer blockbuster action packed sci-fi thriller most were expecting. I must admit that there was a lot less action and suspense throughout the movie than I was imagining there would be but that doesn't mean it wasn't satisfying.

My wife has never seen any of the Alien movies before and although she enjoyed the movie, she was completely lost and didn't appreciate it the way I did. I tried explaining a lot of it to her and I think it only confused her more. The thing I love most about this movie is that it's a completely new story built in a universe that is nostalgic yet mysterious. You really feel like you're on this journey to find our maker with them.

    Infuckingdeed.

I just rewatched the first 2 Aliens recently and was overwhelmed by how good is the original; and despite being 7(I think) years older than the second one it seems it's the other way around.

I have yet to watch Prometheus, though, hasn't arrived here yet, I'm hoping it does on friday.
  • Jason Carne

I'm basically right in the middle about Prometheus. Visually stunning, interesting idea, but it was just painfully average pacing and script wise. There was nothing glaringly awful about the flick, but nothing about it really shined either, seems like they just half-assed the whole thing to me.

I liked it though left a little confused about certain elements I assumed would tie into 'Alien'.
It was pretty cool seeing Gigers Harkonenn design used for the engineers pyramid.

I agree with everybody else on 'mystery' factor. Alien wouldn't have been so iconic nor mythical if everything was explained (or developed).

I did not care for the giant squid design. Seemed too foreign from past concepts.
Oh and Charlie Theron sucked as usual.
  • Andrew Haines

I liked it a lot. I saw it with a few friends and my girlfriend, of which I was the only one who liked it haha. I agree with Sol, and it definitely had some deep shit hidden in there and the reviews helped me understand and like it soooo much more. I was pretty satisfied overall and am definitely looking forward to a new one. My girlfriend asked me a question (which I fucking HATE during movies) RIGHT at the scene when David was cracking the bottles of black goo and plotting his whole little scheme, was that mentioned if it was for a specific reason? I thought it was Weyland telling him to but that was an assumption since I wasn't paying full attention then.

I do feel that it was a little loose though on certain things that seemed overlooked and just easy fixes that bothered me, Vickers banging the Captain at the EXACT time the other dudes needed help, then the whole ship crashing run in a straight line thing but Shaw gets saved by a small rock part I just hated. I also think the time frames were kind of off, how does it only take 4 years to get to a new star's solar system and not explain even in the slightest?
  • Lion Caster

I feel like it will be a much better movie when a directors cut comes out on blu ray. It seemed like there was a bunch of little stuff taken out esp character development...I felt like I didn't really care about the characters.

If I see it, I will like it. I honestly think this is hollywood or the government's strategy of slowly desensitizing us from the thought of an alien visit. Man, this shit ties in with reality!!! how many movies can do that shit, huh? sorry. coffee talking.
  • naio_

i am a huge fan of the first 2 (alien + aliens) and i went to the theater with high expectations. All i can say is that i left the theater...thinking...a lot. :)
I was so amazed by the movie that i watched Alien the following day and believe it or not, it lost 2 stars from my personal "rating".
    So yea...for me

These kinds of questions are why the movie fell apart for me. I thought it was visually stunning and i was completely on board for the first 45 minutes and then it went to shit. I love that the writers wanted to put in a lot of subtext and that there weren't clear explanations of what the engineers intentions were. you wanna keep shit vague, cool, i dig it - I like Kubrick movies too. But there's way too many head scratching "what the fucks?" in this movie to be ignored. I dont need to list them all. Anyone with a handful of braincells would already naturally be asking "well why did they do this?" and "seems weird for a scientist to do that?".
The frustration is that you shell out $21 (3d imax is fucknuts expensive!) you expect to be told an interesting story. Not handed a visual madlib and charged with filling in your own blanks. And, if you're going to do that at the very least make sure that the smart and cool outweighs the dumb and pointless. Maybe even sprinkle a little science in your science fiction movie. I really wanted to love it, I did, and its been ripping me apart since last week thinking about how killer it could have been - and i think for the people like me who feel this way, its not that we dont "get it" or are too naive to see the hidden subtleties its just that we were too punch drunk from all the nonsensical bs to buy into it.

Yeah, I agree with some of those issues. I just think the movie is getting so much negativity directed at it. I personally really enjoyed it. However, my friend and I did have a long discussion afterwards about the little things that were just off or pointless in the movie. The geologist/biologist characters were one of the biggest things that frustrated me.

I guess it's just one of those "like it or not" situations.

Its not that at all. This movie has a ton to offer. Its visually the best thing I've seen in years. The world scott created was absolutely incredible and i was in awe of it the entire movie. In that respect it's a huge success which is maybe why the flaws are harder to ignore. Im personally not telling anyone not to see it. Its totally worth checking out and forming your own opinion.
