Posted June 6th, 2012 by Dzul Alerion
Hey guys,
Let me introduce myself, i'm owner of a new clothing business, and we just released our Summer Line, which is basically just 2 new designs. The Gaia Emblem & Ice Owl. All the designs on the line are done by me. As a designer and a business owner, i would like your critiques and experience on how i can improve my design works and what is lacking in my clothing line. Basically, i want to know what YOU think. Thank you in advance if you've been kind enough to spill something out here.

For example looking at your opening sentence:
We are a small independent clothing store based in Lion City, Singapore, that was started by 18 year old, product design student, Dzulkanean.
Maybe change that to:
We are a small independent clothing store based in Lion City, Singapore. The label was initially started by 18 year old product design student, called Dzulkanean.
Personally I really like your "peace" design, I think it's got a really cool vibe. Conversely, I'm pretty put off by your "CRUNK'D" design. Your other typography work is much nicer.
The site itself is really clean and works well.

Well, actually the site was designed/built/coded by a guy called Justin Juno! Here's the link to his portfolio! http://www.justinjuno.com/

Yes, personally, i would agree that the Crunk'd shirt HAS got to go.. It's actually the first shirt that i designed. And i thought it was "cool", but as i matured and started to understand the art of typography, i am ashamed of it i must say... Here's a link to a typography design that i did. You can tell me what you think of it! http://mintees.com/tees/349970-yolo

I agree. I've been trying to solve that part of the question... And i must say, that it's kinda of a hard answer/solution to find. I am still discovering it. And i understand the importance of it! There are tons and thousands of clothing line opening up out there, and to be stand out, i need to know what separates us from them. I deff have that still in mind, and will figure that part out! I appreciate your comment!

Maybe, at that point of time, i REALLY had no idea what it really means. If there's one thing i could change, i would really change the name of my brand. I realised how important a brand name is only after i opened it up. I basically jumped into the t shirt business world with no knowledge of design/silkscreen printing and stuff. But i'm still learning. I take this as an experience to improve my understanding and design and to move forward. And yes, like mentioned in the above comments, the Crunk'd shirt was the first shirt i made. And i had no basic understanding about typography and design. But now i deff do! Or atleast i think! You can tell me what you think of this! http://mintees.com/tees/349970-yolo :|

Thank you for the comment! Now that you've mentioned it, i will look into the matter. This is why i started this post, mainly cause of the reason i want to improve myself as a brand owner and a designer! & i checked out your site as well, i must say, i really digg the layout of the web, and the shirt design is pretty simple and it is all in unity. Unlike mine where it's a mixture. Hahah, my fav is deff the Cecil! Thanks again mate!

then you should change your story page. "heratic" is fine for the name i guess, but your explanation of why you did it doesn't make any sense.

How shall I start my story?... I will try my best to make it short. Let's begin with the name. I got the name “Heratic†from the Motionless In White song Abigail: "She's a witch, she's a witch and i'm a HERETIC". However, I decided to replace the "E" with an "A" to change the word into a noun (..think of different reason as this doesn't make sence..). From early times the word "heretic" was used to describe someone who held different beliefs from the religious governing body. (..I put this in the past tense as heresy can have other meanings now and I removed “my perspective†as you can't really have a perspective on a word. Just an understanding. It means what it means..). My philosophy is that we control our own lives! We have the ability to make things work for us. We do not have to believe in God to accomplish these things as most of what we want is already in our grasp (I'm not suggesting that we should all be Atheists as that is up to you). It's just a matter of how badly we want it. 80% of the successful people in the world WORKED HARD to achieve their success. I believe that hard work self belief is all you need! (..I removed the luck part as it contradicted your final statement “all you needâ€..)
My aim is to inspire people with the notion that we can do ANYTHING we want. I remember when I wanted to start this clothing line a lot of people didn't have faith/trust in me. But, when I look back, this motivated me to prove them wrong. There is a great quote from the band Sleeping With Sirens: "Remember when they said that what we want could never be done? Well look who's laughing now". To me this means that all you need is faith/hope in yourself. One of Heratic Clothing's achievements was to gain respect and support from Alex Torres of Alesana. Having Alex impressed by the “Hope tank†really made me proud of my work. With that, thank you listening. If you made it all the way here, I hope you're inspired by my story. Have faith in yourself! (..I would personally remove all the name dropping stuff..)

Juno is the bomb when it comes to creating a smart website. Good choice.

Generally agree with this. While some are good designs, overall they don't flow together. You're not a boutique selling multiple brands, you're 1 brand that should have a voice.
Totally, put that on sale and push it through. The other designs look thought out and have time put into them. That one stands out the most as just being a "trendy" saying on a tee in a typical font.
