What a good post! Like you said, its been said time and time before but he did put a comic spin on it which was nice. Its how it would be if the world was perfect anyway, but sadly it's not :(

so true, that's why i never start a project with a down payment of more than half of what i'm supposed to get, real friends pay you for your work cuz they know you got to eat.

the world ain't perfect but money is

sick of hearing that same bull shit about '' can you do this for me, i'm just starting up but i don't have the money'' then they rant on giving you a lecture that has nothing to do with you or your time, that's so fucking disrespectful.

anyways great post man, ya should burn fire on posers too

this whole argument seems to go hand in hand with the ridiculous amount of new clothing lines popping up every day. im not sure at what point everyone decided that they are or should be a business owner, but i feel like there's a new line every day. a lot of these people doing this have no real idea of how the art industry works or understand the value of illustrations. there are times in all our careers that we trade work for a lower profit or free for higher exposure, but that doesnt work when you are a new company offering exposure to an artist. unless of course being stacked in a box in the garage counts. although the internet offers vast opportunity, i wish it didnt convince everyone that they can be their own boss and run a business.

Blows my mind whenever I see anyone working for free. Its just idiotic. Someone is profiting off of your time and work, you deserve to be fairly compensated.

If anyone offers anything for free my first thought is 'what's wrong with it...' this is my first though when someone comes back to me with a quote for artwork with a very low price.

I do not want to pay for artwork that a designer is not happy with and is willing to let it go for peanuts I want something they want to keep a hold of because they like it so much.

I don't think they price stuff low because there is a problem with it, they price it low because they either don't know any better or have to based on their experiences. They probably don't want to price stuff that low, but if they can't sell anything at their original quotes, they end up lowering them. I know I've done that a bunch of times and it sucks. I've never given anything away for peanuts, but sometimes you just have to lower your standards.

nah man, when you wanted to buy that awesome tablet did you ask the store to cut you out on half ?, my take is, if ya want clients to respect you , charge them good not biscuit crumbs , i refuse the advice of a client to tell me whether my price is worth it or not.

I said I don't give anything away for peanuts, but at some point, you have to take whatever you can get. Not all of us have clients constantly contacting us. So its either you stick your ground and never sell anything, or lower your price to get something at least. I can't pay bills with my pride.

there's also the issue of people thinking they need low prices to get/keep their clients.

oh damn, she priced an hour payment equal as my whole day payment.
we got wrong here, but me know price is a hard things to change, from every designer's mind.

Great article, thanks for sharing this dude.

I another problem is that very few are doing anything that tries to be even the least bit inspired. Cool illustrations, may be cool, but come on, think a little more. Simplistic, filtered "est.2011" sure easily wearable, but everyone of them could be from the same damn line. And no one is trying to be the least bit iconic, or bring a cohesive feel to their brand.
