Sorry for such a dumb question guys, but if I have a design: 14x17 inches at 300 dpi what is a good frequency to use when creating a halftone? I was using 35 but when I printed it out the dots looked a little big.

Depends on your printer, ask them.

What if i don't know the printer? Say I'm designing for a band or something? (I'm using halftones for textures)

35 is pretty safe number. If you want to push it you could go up to 45-60 but not all printers are going to be able to print that

The do it at a reasonable number like 35, but also leave the original photo in case the printer needs to do it themselves.

And there you go! Sometimes I leave a few layers in at different frequencies.
