Bad TV Reception Tutorial

How to create a Bad TV Reception in photoshop (In 20 steps)
This is my first tutorial so bare with me...
Final image
1.
This is the original photo I used.
Which is going to go inside the TV set (no particular specifications went into choosing this picture)
2.
Next I needed a TV set to put the photo inside of,
I was looking for a TV with a curved shape screen.
I got this from deviantART in the stock section.
HERE
3.
I took both images into photoshop creating a new file size 10cm X 10cm @ 300dpi
(because that was the size I needed but you can chose any size which suits you)
Because of the dimensions of the TV are wider than it is tall and the canvas I created was square - I stretched the image
(which you aren't suppose to do but for this I don't think it matters)
4.
Next I created a frame around the TV covering everything in black except for the screen (using the pen tool)
5.
Using the gradient tool I created a dark grey (#282828) to lighter grey(#525252) gradient in a layer behind the border.
(going from right to left)
6.
I hid the border & gradient I created (leaving only the photo of the TV) with the eye dropper I selected white and went SELECT>COLOR RANGE and set fuzziness to about 90. I Created a new layer, turned the blending mode to screen, and filled the selection with white (make sure this layer sits behind the border but in-front of everything else so far)
I turned back on all my layers,
7.
I used the same technique but with grey to copy some of the TV frame and put it in a new layer over the black border,
8.
I used a (black) brush set to 20% opacity and smoothed out the edges of the grey frame.
Then set the layer to 50% opacity,
9.
In a new layer in-front of the TV glare I created four black to transparent gradients coming from the corners of the screen into the middle. Set the layer bending mode to soft light and made it 60% opacity,
10.
This is TV frame finished. I selected my photo for going inside the TV and positioned that in a layer between the background gradient and the TV frame layers. Using the pen tool i roughly cut out my picture leaving the person and the gradient showing through,
11.
Then I merged the gradient with the photo and duplicated that into a new document for the TV effects.
(For this I used techniques that I read in this tutorial,
HERE)
In the new document I duplicated the image again (into a new layer) and went FILTER> STYLIZE>EMBOSS.
Set the angle to 135 degrees
Set the height to 15 pixels
Set the amount to 80%
and put the layer behind the 1st photo.
12.
Next I created a new layer and filled it with a scan line pattern,
13.
SELECT>COLOR RANGE (white).
Then hid the layer and selected the EMBOSSED layer.
Chose the MOVE tool and moved the selection with the left arrow key.
14.
I selected the original photo layer set its blending mode to multiply and deleted the scan line pattern.
The resulting image was too dark so I went to the LAYER ADJUSTMENTS and selected BRIGHTNESS / CONTRAST
I turned the brightness up and the contrast down until it looked right.
And dragged it back into my original document.
15.
Next I used a tip I got from Jeff Finley
I took that photo and went,
FILTER>NOISE>ADD NOISE
Amount 4.8%
Gaussian & monochromatic.
Then went,
FILTER>BLUR>GAUSSIAN BLUR
Radius about 1.0 pixels (too blur the noise we just added)
Then, FILTER>SHARPEN>SMART SHARPEN
about Amount 80%
Radius 2.9 pixels
Remove: Gaussian Blur
This technique wears down the photo,
16.
Next I used some distorting techniques I got from watching this,
( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDnwR4dheqk )
With the photo selected FILTER>DISTORT>WAVE
No. of Generators 17
Wavelength: Min 1 / Max 999
Amplitude: Min 5 / Max 35
Scale: Horiz 23 / Vert 36
Type: SINE
Wrap Around
17.
Then I duplicated the image, I just distorted, into a new layer
With this layer selected FILTER>DISTORT>WAVE
No. of Generators 17
Wavelength: Min 1 / Max 999
Amplitude: Min 5 / Max 35
Scale: Horiz 23 / Vert 36
Type: SQUARE
Wrap Around
18.
With a splatter brush I deleted most of this layer leaving only a few sections around the face.
The rest will be covered up by the TV frame.
19.
Next I imported some textures I downloaded from CXCITY,
HERE
I resized and brought in,
"Scratched Stone" - inverted / soft light / 40% opacity
"Film Grain Heavy" - soft light / 40% opacity
"Film Grain Light" - (as is)
"Dust" - inverted/ soft light
20.
Then I turned on the TV border with all the earlier effects. Finished.
